Design Fresh Enough to Eat
& Fork, a new book from Phaidon Press, shows off the work
of 100 daring new industrial designers

Imaginative, elegant industrial design can distinguish a product on the shelf and in the eyes of consumers. A new book from Phaidon Press, & Fork, featuring work by 100 cutting-edge industrial designers from around the globe, makes an intriguing resource for companies searching for fresh product-design ideas and talent. The designers featured in the book were selected by 10 of the world’s most respected industry experts, including Italy’s Francesca Picchi, editor of the Milan-based glossy magazine Domus; British designer Tom Dixon, creative director of furniture retailer Habitat; Sang-kyu Kim, curator at the Hangaram Design Museum at the Seoul Arts Center in Korea; and Julie Lasky, editor-in-chief of New York-based I.D. magazine.
The book’s title references and complements Spoon, an earlier Phaidon publication that also features contemporary designers. Like Spoon, & Fork provides a snapshot of international trends in contemporary design, and features both established designers (such as Yves Béhar) and lesser-known firms (Brazil’s Nada Se Leva). It’s also a look at how young designers are experimenting with forms, materials, and concepts to create unusual kitchen appliances, home accessories, and other commercial objects – such as the fire-retardant Sponge Chair, shown, by Dutch designer Peter Traag, which is made from molded liquid foam and reinforced with fluorocarbon polyester thread. Ligero Small Side Table, 2006 - Nada Se Leva
Sao Paolo-based design studio Nada Se Leva is an up-and-coming firm making trendy pieces such as this acrylic side table, which features elegant, baroque-style forms. Designers around the world have been working with this easy-to-clean material for a few years now.
